В 2008 году Пензенский государственный университет отметил сразу несколько юбилеев. Во-первых, это 65-летие существования самого вуза, который был создан в 1943 году на базе передислоцированной в Пензу небольшой части Одесского индустриального института. Второй юбилейной датой можно назвать 50-летие со дня преобразования Пензенского индустриального института в Пензенский политехнический институт. Третья юбилейная дата связана с перепрофилированием института в университет — это произошло 15 лет назад, в 1993 году. И, наконец, 10 лет назад, в 1998 году, легендарный «политех» избавился от статуса технического вуза, став классическим университетом.
ПГУ на протяжении 65 лет профессионально готовит специалистов разных областей. Сейчас в его ведении — несколько институтов и больше десяти факультетов, преподаватели 78 кафедр обучают студентов по 65 специальностям. Вузу принадлежат 10 учебных корпусов и 5 общежитий. На базе университета действуют единственный в Пензе Учебный военный центр, готовящий офицеров запаса, и Медицинский институт, выпускающий первоклассных специалистов в области медицины и фармацевтики. С 1956 года ПГУ издает ежемесячную «Университетскую газету», в которой в качестве журналистов пробуют силы не только преподаватели, но и студенты. Чтобы дать своему образованию наибольшие масштабы, были открыты несколько филиалов университета в Пензенской области — в Нижнем Ломове, Кузнецке и Сердобске, а также несколько научно-педагогических школ, обучающих по физико-математическому, техническому и гуманитарному направлениям. Последние десять лет ректором ПГУ является доктор технических наук, профессор Владимир Волчихин. Именно благодаря его первоклассному руководству университет пошел в гору: ежегодно открываются новые специальности и факультеты, появляются тенденции к созданию на базе ПГУ отдельных центров и учебных управлений (таких, как автошкола «Политехник Плюс»).
